How Mercedes is using QR codes to help accident victims

Mercedes-Benz is working on a system that may help emergency workers quickly and safely rescue trapped occupants in wrecked vehicles. The system pairs rescue sheets that show firefighters, police and paramedics information on exactly how and where to use rescue sheers to extract trapped passengers, the location of major hydraulic lines, air bags and electrical cables as well as other important vehicle data with QR codes. Using two stickers with the codes prominently displayed, rescue workers can scan the code and instantly pull up the necessary information quickly with an internet connection. The plan could reduce rescue times and help save lives.

Currently, rescue workers have to rely on hard copy rescue sheets or must look up the information online, assuming the sheets are available at all. Mercedes-Benz has waived the right to patent the system in the hope that other automakers will take advantage of the technology. You can read the full press release below for more information.

Rolls-Royce gets into LSR game, backs Bloodhound SSC

  Rolls-Royce, the "power solutions" company that makes jet engines and much more (not the luxury motorcar company) has signed on to support the Bloodhound SSC Land Speed Record attempt project. This isn't just a financial tie-up and exchange of engines and tech, though, Rolls-Royce is just as interested as the Bloodhound gang in promoting science, technology, engineering and mathematics to children in the UK and around the world.
  It will be providing its EJ200 jet engine that powers the Eurofighter Typhoon combat jet with 20,000 pounds of thrust. In the Bloodhound, the engine will be the first stage in the hybrid rocket system that they hope will get the SSC to 1,000 miles per hour. Coincidentally, although Rolls-Royce hasn't been officially involved with Bloodhound before, its engines have been used to break records in the Bloodhound predecessors Thrust 2 and Thrust SSC.

2014 Nissan GT-R Track Pack squares off against Audi R8 V10 Plus

The team over at Motor Trend has pitted the new Audi R8 V10 Plus against the Nissan GT-R. While both of the bright red all-wheel-drive supercars are comparably matched in power output, the similarities end there. Audi offers a mid-engine aluminum coupe with a naturally aspirated V10 that spits out 550 horsepower. Nissan shows up with a more traditional coupe equipped with a 545-horsepower twin-turbocharged V6 at the front of the car.
  The Head-to-Head video takes both cars to the Streets of Willow Springs in the California desert for some track work with professional racing driver Randy Pobst behind the wheel. After a day at the track, the pair head to the local mountains for some spirited real-world driving. One dominates on the circuit, while the other earns back its credibility in the canyons. We won't tell you which coupe comes out on top, but we think you may be surprised. Follow the link below to watch for yourself.

Recall: 7,438 Maserati models for rusting suspension parts

  Maserati is recalling 7,438 cars for tie rods that can rust and cause a loss of driver control, according to filings with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
  The 2005-2008 Quattroporte sedan, 2008 GranTurismo coupe and the ultrarare 2008 Alfa Romeo 8C (of which only 84 were imported into the United States) are affected. It's an especially large number for Maserati, which sells a little more than 2,000 cars per year in the States.
  The left and right rear tie rods, which set the wheel toe alignment, may not have enough rustproofing material and can eventually corrode, leading to a noisy suspension or failure, Maserati said. The company said it was aware of five claims of rusted tie rods, possibly due to the rustproofing material coming off the tie rod's thread when wheels and tires get swapped and refastened. No related accidents have been reported.
  Alfa Romeo, owned by Fiat Group along with Maserati and Ferrari, was imported for one model year and has no existing dealerships after pulling out of the U.S. market in 1995. A new sports car, the Alfa Romeo 4C, may come as early as 2014.

  В Интернет, по причине невнимательности сотрудников компании, просочились первые фотографии обновленной немецкой модели BMW M5. В Сети эти изображения появились раньше положенного срока. Как известно, продажи нового BMW M5 должны начаться в конце текущего года.
  Изображения седана опубликованы порталом Bimmertoday. По этим фотоснимкам можно сделать вывод о том, что в дизайне автомобиля не произойдет каких-либо существенных изменений. В результате обновления немецкий седан BMW M5 будет оснащён немного видоизменённой радиаторной решёткой с наличием более крупных прорезей. Немного доработана будет головная оптика. Стоит отметить, что почти такая же решётка радиатора установлена на модель BMW M6.
  В интерьере изменений также будет немного. В основном они коснутся руля. Автомобиль получит новое модернизированное рулевое колесо, с более тонким ободом. На нем будет применена новая «шайба» фирменного контроллера, под названием iDrive. Эта «шайба» будет с сенсорной поверхностью. Аналогичные «шайбы» применяются на ряде моделей Audi. При помощи этой технологии можно вносить часть данных в систему, используя при этом только палец, которым рисуются буквы и цифры на самом сенсоре.
  Двигатель останется прежним: восьмицилиндровый 4,4-литровый мотор с двойным турбонаддувом, мощность которого 560 лошадиных сил. Есть данные, что после обновления, седан может получить комплект Competition Package. Это оригинальный пакет опций, с помощью которого можно увеличить мощность двигателя до 575 лошадиных сил. Также опциональный пакет включает в себя установку колёсных дисков размером в 20 дюймов, оригинальный дизайн. В нем предусмотрено и наличие ещё более спортивной подвески.
  Какова будет стоимость, обновленного BMW M5, пока не сообщается. По предварительным данным, минимальная цена автомобиля будет начинаться от 130,3 тысяч евро.

В России растут продажи премиальных автомобилей

 В апреле продажи на авторынке России упали на 8%. За этот месяц было реализовано 245,3 тысяч новых автомобилей. Падение продаж затронуло, прежде всего, бюджетные автомобили. Как ни странно, продажи премиальных автомобилей выросли на 10%.
Агентство «Автостат» сообщило, что модель «АвтоВАЗа» Lada      Kalina за апрель снизила уровень своих продаж на 36%. На территории России этих моделей было продано всего 8,8 тысячи автомобилей. Меньше всего было продано автомобилей Lada Priora: их продажа уменьшилась на 56% (4,9 тысяч моделей). Упали в продажах на российском авторынке и модели Renault Logan, Opel Astra, а также Daewoo Nexia, на 33, 34 и 55 процентов, соответственно.
  Между тем, премиальные автомобили в апреле пользовались большим спросом, и показали достаточно стабильный рост продаж. К примеру, уровень продаж новых автомобилей Mercedes, на территории России увеличился на 18%. Автомобилей марки BMW было продано на 7 процентов больше, чем в марте. Продажи автомобилей Audi, Land Rover, Lexus выросли на 11, 9 и 14 процентов, соответственно.
  Аналитик ВТБ-Капитал Владимир Беспалов связывает такой рост продаж в премиальном сегменте с тем, что покупательная способность людей, которые приобретают роскошные машины, более стабильная, и менее подвержена, различного рода, колебаниям на финансовом рынке. В то же время, другой аналитик агентства — Игорь Краевский считает, что такая ситуация сложилась из-за того, что малообеспеченные покупатели приобретают недорогой автомобиль в кредит, что также сказывается на продажах автомобилей.
  По мнению российских экспертов, в ближайшие месяцы уровень продаж новых автомобилей на российском авторынке также будет падать.

Lexus LFA owner gets town to remove speed bump

 What do you do if you have enough money to buy a Lexus LFA but can't get the car safely to your house? Get local government involved, of course. Rune Berge Vik, of Stavanger, Norway, did just that after he bought a Lexus LFA last year only to find out that it could not clear a speed bump in his neighborhood.
  To remedy the situation, Vik got in touch with his city, which had the speed bump removed. Talk about your tax dollars hard at work. On the other hand, it's commendable that the man actually uses his supercar as a daily driver, and besides, doesn't a street-legal car have the right to access said public streets?

2014 Lexus IS gets TRD bits

  Toyota Racing Development (TRD) in Japan has designed cosmetic and performance bits that give the 2014 Lexus IS a front-to-back workover. Different from the F-Sport parts we expect from Lexus here, the full body kit runs 437,700 yen ($4,285 US) and starts with air deflectors at the lower edges of the front bumper, through to side skirts, a decklid spoiler and a rear bumper with a diffuser and quad exhaust tips.
  For 288,750 yen ($2,830) you can sharpen responses with new shocks, springs, dampers, sway bar and bracing. The priciest individual component is the set of 19-inch wheels, four of them going for 527,625 yen (5,170 US). There's no word on US importation or pricing yet, but done up all in black like the IS above, we wouldn't mind seeing it here.
